‘Hum Your Way to Better Health’ Wins SciFest 2016
Caolann Brady , a student from Celbridge, Kildare, won the grand award in the SciFest 2016 final, held at the Marino Conference Centre in Dublin on Friday, November 11, with a project titled Hum Your Way to Better Health.
The Irish Examiner reported that Brady was born with asthma, prompting her to develop a technique to control attacks by humming into a paper bag at a precise pitch for 45 seconds. Testing the technique on a range of subjects, Brady found that the technique improved lung function for 45 minutes, with a 99.9% statistical confidence.
The SciFest 2016 grand final saw the 16 overall winners of the regional SciFest fairs display their projects to compere for a trophy and an all-expenses paid trip to Los Angeles, California to represent Ireland in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May 2017.
Each of the 58 finalists was also presented with an Excellence in STEM Award to mark their achievement in reaching the National Final of SciFest 2016.
