Medtech firm Phenox bringing 65 jobs to Galway with new facility
Medtech giant Medtronic will establish a new manufacturing facility in Galway to manufacture its next-generation medical device to treat artery disease, the company has announced. More than 100 skilled professionals will be based at the new facility.
It has been a particularly good morning for Galway in the run up to Christmas with the news that the medical device manufacturer Phenox is to create 65 jobs in the city over the next five years in manufacturing, research, sales and supports fields. The Galway facility will have 20,000 square feet of space with 8,000 square feet dedicated to manufacturing and will cost approximately €13m.
Phenox is a German company founded in 2005 that has specialised in producing products that are used by endovascular specialists to treat ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes with its headquarters based in the city of Bochum.
The firm has said that it will be creating a new Irish manufacturing facility on the outskirts of Galway city in Ballybrit Business Park.
To facilitate a first hiring of 65 new staff, Phenox says that the new facility should begin operations in the early stages of 2016 and will bring the company’s total employees to just under 200 internationally.
Elsewhere in the western city, Medtronic also announced that it was to open a new facility of its own to manufacture its next generation medical device to treat artery disease, specifically the manufacture of the IN.PACT Admiral drug-coated balloon for the treatment of peripheral artery disease.
Jobs Minister Richard Bruton TD commeted the news :
“The investment in Galway today by Medtronic is a great example of the type of manufacturing projects we are trying to develop in Ireland – highly-skilled jobs, manufacturing innovative products, for sale in global markets. I wish Tony and the team every success with this project.”
