PRESIDENT HIGGINS ATTENDS EVENT IN BEIJING TO CELEBRATE SCIENTIFIC LINKS BETWEEN IRELAND AND CHINA
Beijing, 9th December 2014 – A celebration of scientific research links between Ireland and China took place during the State Visit of President Michael D. Higgins to China. The showcase event organised by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) celebrated the collaborative work that is underway between institutions in China and Ireland across a range of scientific disciplines.
During the showcase, President Higgins was introduced to Chinese and Irish researchers who are currently collaborating on research projects. The event also provided an opportunity to promote the newly supported twelve SFI Research Centres to Chinese academic and industrial researchers. The President met with Ms. Qiulin Liu, a 4th year Master-Doctor candidate at Tsinghua University who spent time at University College Cork (UCC) collaborating with SFI researchers in the area of marine renewable energy at the MaREI SFI Research Centre.

President Higgins also met with Professor Qun Liu, an Investigator at the Adapt SFI Research Centre at Dublin City University (DCU) and Professor at the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, who provided an overview of his research in the area of multilingual natural language processing and machine translation.
During the event, President Higgins also met with Professor Li Fengqin of the China National Centre for Food Safety Risk Assessment and John Yu, PhD student at University College Dublin who spoke to the President in relation to the deep links between CFSA and UCD including the exchange programmes in operation between the two institutions.

Professor Mark Ferguson, Director General of Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of Ireland said: “Ireland’s international reputation as a leader in research has been enhanced significantly in recent years as a result of almost 2,000 national and international collaborations in 48 countries. Further collaboration with our colleagues in China will allow the scientific ecosystem across both nations to grow, to continue to attract quality researchers and foster excellent research.”
